Killer took own life after charity shop suspension

- BY DAVID MEIKLE

A MURDERER who killed his wife after she had an affair took his own life after being suspended from working in a charity shop,.

Richard Farquhar, 61, was jailed after slaying Anne, 45, in 2008 on the A90 between Aberdeen and Stonehaven.

Farquhar was held in HMP Greenock and was nearing the end of the punishment part of his sentence, and moving to less restrictive procedures.

This included a placement in a charity shop.

But he was suspended after his placement supervisor began to feel “increasingly uncomfortable”.

Farquhar held a number of meetings with the jail’s risk management team (RMT) but was found seriously injured in his cell in March 2019 just 25 minutes after being told he would remain suspended. He later died in hospital.

A fatal accident inquiry at Greenock Sheriff Court has found his death could have been avoided.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre said the RMT and prisoners should work closer together to keep inmates informed.

The Prison Service was approached for comment.
