Isle in bid to revive slate production

-

AN island is to revive its slate industry in a move it hopes will defend it against coastal erosion.

Luing in the Inner Hebrides had 15 slate quarries in the 19th century.

Now it has plans to blast open a new slate bed, starting work in 2024.

Waste rock would be used to defend its beach from rising tides and storms. It is hoped the move will create jobs and grow the island population.
