ADAM NEEDS TO BE ON THE FRONT FOOT

-

ADAM THOMAS has to hit the back of the net this weekend to stand a chance of sprinting at this summer’s world or European championships.

He lines up at the British trials in Manchester against the huge depth of domestic talent in tomorrow night’s heats of the 100 metres.

But Thomas, who smashed the Scottish 60m record en route to a shock place in March’s world indoor final in Belgrade, senses it’s time for even more payback for his gamble in quitting football for athletics.

“Both my brothers were talented,” he said. “My eldest brother played for Reading when he was a young lad for a good few years.

“Football was kind of our life. That was our childhood – football came first, education was second.”

Thomas’ ultimate ambition is to break Allan Wells Scottish record of 10.11 that has stood since his bolt to Olympic gold in Moscow in 1980. “I intend to,” he said.

Eilish McColgan, meanwhile, has been forced out of the 5000m in Manchester due to a sickness bug.
