Best music year was 77, say experts

- BY DAVID JARVIS

MUSIC experts have voted 1977 as the greatest year in the history of pop music.

Seventies legends like Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, and Diana Ross are still going strong at Glasto and music bible Record Collector magazine said they represent the real golden era in music.

1977 saw the release of Abba’s first album, rock classic Let There Be Rock by AC/DC, Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees, the first album of the The Clash, the emergence of the Sex Pistols and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album.

Record Collector editor Paul Lester said: “There was so much new music to love, it suddenly felt as though ‘old’ music was surplus to requirements. 1977 merits contention for the crown.”
