Model star Berrettini has look of contender

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

MATTEO BERRETTINI’S been grabbing headlines ahead of Wimbledon – on and off the court.

Last year’s finalist is back at the Grand Slam after winning grass court titles in Stuttgart – where he beat Andy Murray – and at Queen’s Club.

The No.8 seed with the huge serve and massive forehand has won 20 of his last 21 matches on grass, his only defeat against Novak Djokovic here last year.

But the Italian, who has just split from long-time girlfriend and fellow pro Ajla Tomljanovic, has also become a heartthrob.

And amid all the female interest, a male spectator made a jokey proposal from the stands at Queen’s.

Berrettini shot back: “Let me think about it.”

As a Boss model, he is now recognised walking down any London street.

But Berrettini is humble about his good fortune.

He said: “My physical beauty is something people want to talk about but it is not something that defines who I am.

“You are talking to me because I am a tennis player and I have had some results. When people say to me I am beautiful, it is nice to hear. But it is better to thank my mother.

“Beauty can attract certain sponsors but that does not make you play better. Or the world No.1 would be the most beautiful person in the world.”

Berrettini’s form has been remarkable after three months out in the wake of hand surgery.

But at 26, the player nicknamed The Hammer still awaits his Grand Slam breakthrough.

He added: “In 2021 I lost against the best, Novak and Rafa (Nadal). I am convinced I can beat them.

“It is a question of details, sometimes a bit of luck. I don’t see myself far away.”
