Moneybags Broady says Diego scalp is real prize

- BY MATTHEW DUNN

LIAM BROADY played the richest game of his life – and revealed his plan for the perfect way to celebrate.

Broady may not get any ranking points for his week’s work but his 6-4 4-6 0-6 7-6 6-1 win over No.12 seed Diego Schwartzman carried a huge financial reward.

The prize at Wimbledon for reaching the third round of the singles this year is £120,000.

And the British star joked: “I might just withdraw it all and, like, lie on it. No, I’ve no idea what I will do with the money.

“I’m getting a bit older now so I need to start looking for somewhere to live other than my parents’ house.

“But at the end of the day, as nice as the prize money is, I’m not playing that sort of match.

“I’m not serving at 5-1 and thinking, ‘F***, I’ve got 120 grand here on the line.’ I’m serving and thinking I’m about to beat Diego Schwartzman. That said, it is a nice bonus and I’m sure my mum and dad will be buzzing. I pay the board and all that but maybe it will go up a bit.”

Broady is ranked 132 in the world and has been accused of not playing to his potential by one of his biggest fans, Andy Murray.

They regularly joke on social media – but Broady admitted he did not know how to deal with being in the third round when the former world No.1 was already at home.

He added: “Andy has always been one of my toughest critics but he’s also been one of the greatest advisers that I’ve had.

“He had a tough one yesterday, so I’m not going to even go down that road.”

Fellow Brit Jack Draper saw his run end with a 5-7 7-6 (0) 6-2 6-3 defeat to 19th seed Alex De Minaur.
