Scots may get a shot at Brazil & Argentina

- BY IAN ORR

SCOTLAND look set to be travelling to South America for upcoming Nations League games after the continent’s football chiefs confirmed their plan to play in the European section.

UEFA’s latest international competition is into its third campaign and Steve Clarke’s side will play three more games this year – against Ukraine home and away, plus the Republic of Ireland at Hampden.

Aleksander Ceferin, the president of European football’s governing body, revealed earlier this year he planned to integrate South American sides into the next Nations League tourney due to a lack of friendlies between countries on the two continents.

He said: “South American teams in our Nations League is doable, for sure.

“After the creation of the Nations League, European teams don’t play so many friendlies any more.

“Big teams miss playing against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. They tell us they’d like to play them.”

And Nery Pumpido – the former Argentina star who is now deputy secretary general of South American football’s governing body, Conmebol – believes details will soon be confirmed for teams on the continent to play in the next instalment of the Nations League.

He said: “There is now a very good chance some South American teams will join that tournament from 2023-24.”
