Goodwin’s big call on who will lead by example

-

JIM GOODWIN is set to make a decision in the coming days on Aberdeen’s captain this season.

Joe Lewis is the skipper but his position as first-choice keeper is under serious threat following Kelle Roos’ arrival from Derby.

Scott Brown was team captain for the majority of last season under Stephen Glass and Lewis club captain, albeit the goalie got the armband back when Brown left in March in the wake of Goodwin’s appointment.

Now the Pittodrie manager is considering options this week at the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain.

Ross McCrorie, David Bates and Jonny Hayes are all likely contenders and Goodwin will soon decide who wears the armband this term. He said: “We have a very strong group with a lot of big characters in it.

“Joe has been club captain now for a number of years but we will just have to wait and see how the pre-season pans out.

“Probably in the next week to 10 days I will sit down and have that conversation with the individual involved. But it’s not set in stone and we have a lot of competition for him.

“I have a lot of guys who are used to being captain at their previous clubs. It gives me a lot of leaders on the park.

“It’s an old cliche but you want to have 11 captains out there.

“The armband is an honour as a position where you are leading the boys out.”
