Prince’s SW19 final debut with mum & dad on point
PRINCE George served up a masterclass in royal appearances at his first-ever Wimbledon final.
The eight-year-old stayed wellbehaved in the heat yesterday, keeping his composure despite being buttoned up in a blazer and tie.
George, dashing in the smart outfit, seemed engrossed in the game as Novak Djokovic beat Nick Kyrgios in four sets.
He paid polite attention as his dad William, 40, explained the finer points of the game to him – but he could not resist attending to an itchy nostril at one point.
George was allowed to touch the coveted men’s singles trophy after mum Kate, 40, wearing a £1335 navy polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich, had presented it to the multiple champion Djokovic.
The Serbian ace was spotted shaking hands with William and the young royal shortly after having his name added to the honours board in the All England Club for the seventh time.
As he handed the trophy to George, commentator Sue Barker exclaimed: “Look at that! That’s special isn’t it.”
George held the trophy briefly then said, “It’s a bit heavy!” – before passing it over to his mother.
The young prince is known to be a keen tennis fan and has been having lessons since he was five.
Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champ, previously revealed that he has given George private tuition – and said that the youngster showed some talent.
The family have a court at their Norfolk home Anmer Hall.
There were tributes to Barker, 66, who is retiring from Wimbledon duties. Three-time champ John McEnroe said: “I’ll miss you Sue, everyone will miss you.”
Andrew Garfield, Jason Statham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tom Cruise were among the many stars enjoying the final on Centre Court.
