- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

BELOVED darts commentator John Gwynne has died aged 77 after an 18month battle with cancer.

John retired in 2013 after 20 years commentating for Sky Sports. He was known as the “voice of darts” but he also covered football and cricket.

Jeff Stelling, a fellow Sky Sports presenter, said: “John was blessed with one of the greatest voices.

“He put it to good use on Soccer Saturday, whether at his beloved Manchester City or Rochdale, describing the action with the same gravitas, humour and, always, passion.”

John, of Denton, Greater Manchester, was a teacher before landing radio work.

His son Andrew, a Labour MP, called him “my beautiful father” as he announced his death.
