Vertical cliff conquered by 1-legged para

- BY TOM LAST AMY REAST

AN Army veteran completed one of Britain’s most difficult climbs up a 650ft cliff with a prosthetic leg.

Andrew “Speedy” Speed, 44, negotiated vertical walls of rock on Commando Ridge.

The summit in West Penwith, Cornwall, is one of the UK’s longest climbs.

Speedy, who served for 28 years in the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment, did the ascent with charity Climb2Recovery.

Coordinator Fraser Day said: “I was really impressed. Commando Ridge is a tough climb, even for the able-bodied.”

Speedy injured his right leg in 2012 and had 12 operations over seven years. He decided to have an amputation below the knee in 2019.
