Lewis fury at fan abuse during GP weekend

-

FURIOUS Lewis Hamilton has hit out at allegations of racist and homophobic abuse aimed at fans during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

A number of spectators took to social media to highlight the barrage of insults at the Red Bull Ring, forcing F1 bosses to announce a probe.

Hamilton said via Instagram: “Disgusted and disappointed to hear that some fans are facing racist, homophobic and generally abusive behaviour at the circuit this weekend.

“Attending the Austrian Grand Prix or any GP should never be a source of anxiety and pain for fans and something must be done to ensure that races are safe spaces for all.

“We cannot sit back and allow this to continue.”

More than 60,000 fervent orange-clad Dutch fans travelled from Holland to Spielberg, turning the weekend’s race into a home event for world champion Max Verstappen.

After taking his third podium in as many races, Hamilton added: “We have to do more.

“And it highlights that it is still an issue all over – and it comes down to education.

“You should be able to follow whoever. It shouldn’t matter on your gender, your sexuality or on the colour of your skin.”
