Stokes skips short-form games to be set for Proteas

-

BEN STOKES has pulled out of the opening skirmishes of cricket’s The Hundred in order to rest and prepare for the upcoming Test series with South Africa.

The England captain will play in the ODI series against the Proteas that follows straight after the series decider with India tomorrow but he is giving the shortest forms of the game a miss in order to manage his workload and fitness.

Stokes was meant to be appearing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

It does mean he will have the chance to play in front of a home Durham crowd for England for just the third time in his career and the first time since he became Test captain. ICE HOCKEY: Glasgow Clan have completed their roster for the new season by snapping up another netminder and bringing back a fans’ favourite forward. Goalie Ty Taylor and hitman Nolan LaPorte have put signed for the Elite League campaign, taking coach Malcolm Cameron’s newlook squad up to 21 players.

Cameron said: “Ty offers us a lot of flexibility and options and we’re excited to have him join us for the new season.

“Nolan scored some big goals in key games, as well as showed great leadership.

“His passion and intensity fuelled our club. He’s a good skater, has a good shot and really wants to win and those are the characteristics I like, particularly in those I wanted to bring back.” HOCKEY: Kenny Bain, one of Scotland’s most prolific striker, has retired from international action after a career stretching 15 years which included 196 caps and 107 goals.

Bain said: “I was planning to retire later in the year but realistically now is the time.”
