CALLUM EYES A PERFECT FINISH

- FRASER MACKIE

CALLUM DAVIDSON insists St Johnstone need to be perfect to progress in the Premier Sports Cup.

Saints only picked up a point from their Group F opener at home to Annan.

The 2020/21 winners hope to start their recovery when they travel to face Queens today before a trip to Elgin and then hosting Ayr United.

They’ll be missing banned duo Dan Cleary and Cammy MacPherson in Dumfries, but Davidson has demanded a win.

He said: “The margin for error is definitely tight now. It’s why it’s important to win your home games.

“I’ve told the players they’re going to have to win all three games now to give ourselves a chance.

“I believe we’ve got the players to do that – we just need to make sure we keep all 11 on the pitch.

“We need to make sure we are professional, do things right and go out and get three points.”

Cleary and MacPherson were sent off against Annan, with Davidson furious with his Irish defender over an early off-the-ball incident.

He added: “I would hope for a reaction as I think the lads are disappointed. Listen, sometimes it’s one player.

“I actually thought the rest of the boys played some good stuff and had to work extremely hard to get something from it. We got in behind Annan, tried to create chances.

“I thought we came out with good energy and I’m expecting us to start with the same sort of tempo against Queen of the South, which is going to be a tough game.

“But I still think we could do more when we get to the final third.”

Queens boss Wullie Gibson expects a tough test against Saints.

He said: “St Johnstone are the Premiership side and Callum will have them fired up.

“They will want to win, as will we, so it sets up an interesting game.”
