Law and order but it’s a sweat for MacIntyre

- BY JIM BLACK

DAVID LAW was full of the feelgood factor – but Bob MacIntyre was close to boiling point last night.

Aberdeen’s Law strode into the weekend with shots to spare on his Open debut after a 69 having recovered from an early bogey to card four birdies for a three-under par total.

But Oban’s MacIntyre was made to sweat when he posted a level-par total to hover around the cut mark following a 74.

Law said: “I eventually got a break on 13 when I holed a big putt for birdie. That really got me going.

“I’ve never played a tournament of this magnitude before so to hear everyone shouting my name was brilliant, it was real fun and pretty surreal.

“I was nervous playing the first couple of holes but today was more about just going out there and having a good round of golf.

“I’ve proved I can compete at this level. We’ve got a good game plan and we’ll continue with that.”

MacIntyre, who had a birdie putt at 18 to secure his spot, said: “It was tough. But I hung in well and holed key putts at 16 and 17 to give myself a chance.

“Then at 18 I just misread it. I trusted the line and it just wasn’t the right one.”

MacIntyre praised caddie Mike Thomson for keeping him calm and said: “I was at boiling point and I was stressing a little bit. I was thinking about things. I wasn’t fully committed to what I was working on.

“The last five holes, I had to switch on to commit to the present, forget I was playing The Open and just hit it.”

After squeezing into the weekend by the skin of his teeth, MacIntyre vowed to emerge first thing today with all guns blazing.

He added: “There will be no hanging back. I’m a fair bit back but I know the golf I can play and I’ve been striking it well.”
