WATT TARGETS EURO CHARGE

- BY NEIL ROBERTSON

TONY WATT has a catalogue of European memories to treasure – including that Champions League goal for Celtic against Barcelona.

Now the striker is licking his lips in anticipation at embarking on another continental adventure with Dundee United.

The Tangerines secured their place in the third qualifying round of the Europa Conference League thanks to finishing fourth in the Premiership table last season.

United find out today who they will meet with the draw taking place at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland, at 1pm. And Watt admitted he can’t wait for the return of those special matches.

Watt, who joined United from Motherwell in January, said: “Playing under the lights here will be fantastic. It is David v Goliath whatever you get so let’s go in there and hope we can win.

“We’ll give it our best shot and especially at Tannadice we will give anybody a run for their money.”

There is a chance United could be drawn against one of Watt’s former clubs CSKA Sofia or a side he knows well from his time in Belgium, Anderlecht.

But the 28-year-old insists whoever United get, being back in Europe is a fitting reward for everyone at the club, especially owner Mark Ogren and sporting director Tony Asghar.

Watt said: “We could play teams like Anderlecht or CSKA Sofia.

“I have been in a CSKA Sofia team that was beaten, I have beaten Anderlecht in games, so why can’t we do that?

“It would mean everything to Tony and the chairman just from where they have taken the club in the last few years.

“From not doing really great in the Championship to European football, the rise has been remarkable in such a short time and I only see it going higher with the people controlling the club just now.”
