Spain is still a big draw for criminals
SPAIN has been an attractive destination for UK criminals evading justice throughout its time as a member of the EU.
This is despite much faster and less bureaucratic extradition arrangements in place between EU member states than elsewhere.
The introduction of the European Arrest Warrant procedure in 2004 made extradition from a member state such as Spain far, far quicker.
Its enduring attraction has surprised UK police.
Although we have seen increasing numbers of suspects fleeing to places such as Dubai, there are still plenty who opt for Spain like Ungi and Hendry. Part of the attraction is undoubtedly practical.
Criminals have holidays like everyone else and Spain remains a popular destination for those intent on grabbing some sun.
It is relatively close, cheap and easy to get to. Just as importantly, the home comforts of the UK are readily available in shops.
English is widely spoken and there is a large expat community including many “retired” UK criminals on the Costa del Sol (or, as police often call it, the Costa del Crime).
All of this makes life there far easier for the criminal on the run.
In addition, many drug trafficking routes pass through Spain or nearby countries.
Although, post-Brexit, the UK no longer has access to the EAW system, operational links are in place to swiftly arrange for a suspect to be detained.
The UK’s most wanted lists from the UK National Crime Agency focus attention on the most dangerous suspects. Many, like Hendry, are recognised by UK citizens from the publicity given to their cases in the UK and Spain.
