I’m going from middle age to my last leg.. that doesn’t mean I will be retiring

matter more than anything else.”

Bullet Train has a strong ensemble cast, including Sandra Bullock and Karen Fukuhara from Suicide Squad. Brad plays Ladybug, a US assassin on a Japanese train looking for his target. But it turns out that every carriage contains another hitman or woman, all on an interlocking mission.

Brad said: “It’s a fun action comedy. I like to think of it as the perfect movie for right now. It’s a great heist movie with a lot of really silly and funny stuff happening. We have an amazing cast, which I was very happy to be asked to work with at a time when not many people were able to work. I felt very lucky to be a part of it.”

It was shot during the pandemic and came just in time to save Brad’s sanity.

The actor, who split with Jolie in 2016, admitted: “I went a little stir crazy, a got a little depressed and went a little bit cuckoo during that whole time.

“So when David came to me with this, it was a huge thrill. I couldn’t wait to get going. The script came along at that really dark period of lockdown, before we had vaccinations and before we knew how we were going to get out of it.

“It was just so damn funny. It had so many great parts in it, which meant we could attract a great cast. It just seemed perfect for that time and now

I’m really happy the movie is coming out at a time when the streets are open again and we can be around each other.”

Bullet Train’s themes of luck and fate resonated with the star.

He said: “I do like that in this really funny film, there is this undercurrent message of how we are all agents of fate in some way. I tend to lean this way and believe this. I argue with myself a lot about how much is fate and how much is personal will and manifestation.

“I think they’re both at play but only because I don’t have a better answer.”

He did not miss the hoopla that goes with releasing a potential blockbuster – although he has clearly had a bit of fun with his outfit choices. Brad wore a floaty linen skirt to the premiere in Berlin claiming it “was all about the breeze”.

He’s also been seen horsing around on the red carpet with co-stars including Kissing Booth’s Joey King and Atlanta star Brian Tyree Henry.

“We put everything we had into this story,” he said. “It has come together because the planets really have to align for a movie to be good. We’re really proud of this one and now it’s really nice to let it go and let people see it. Hopefully people will be enjoying it together in a theatre, laughing.”

And while it was a technical challenge to shoot, it’s the chemistry of the cast

There’s a time when you’ve got to let go and accept it. Do I worry about getting older? No

that Brad takes away from the experience. He recalled: “We pulled this whole thing off on one soundstage and it took technical mastery of the latest equipment to be able to do it. That was really exciting.

“But I just can’t say enough about that time. We were all kind of losing it, so to be able to go to work, have a laugh and know that we were bringing something that I think is going to be nice for everyone in that time and this time was really the prevailing theme. That will always resonate with me.” Experience has taught him that the best scripts take him places he has not been before. Brad said: “I’m looking for something new – something that I haven’t explored before. Something that feels fresh and is a new direction. As I get older, it’s about the company I keep and the people I get to work with. “And variety. I like a bit of variety.”  Bullet Train is in cinemas from August 3.
