DEFOE: I TOLD RABBI TO GET DEAL DONE
JERMAIN DEFOE might have hung up his boots but he’s still helping Rangers get over the line.
The former Ibrox frontman played a part in delivering the title in 2021 and he revealed he’s still doing his bit for the club after nudging new signing Rabbi Matondo in the right direction.
Defoe – back at Ibrox for Saturday’s glamour friendly against his other former club Spurs – admitted he got in touch with the Welsh youngster before the deal was completed. Defoe rated the ex-Man City and Schalke kid and was impressed by his part in the opening goal before Rangers went down to the Premier League heavy hitters.
He said: “I messaged Rabbi, as he’s part of the same agency as me. I basically said, ‘good luck’ but I also told him to get the deal done because he’ll love it. As a young lad it’s such a good experience for him to come here, especially with the demands
of winning every week. It’s been good with all the players who have come in. It’s exciting. I spoke to the manager and he’s happy with the squad.” Defoe was delighted to get a hero’s welcome on his return to Ibrox and, speaking to Rangers TV, he said: “I’ve still got friends here so it’s always special to come back.”
