FIVE SCOTS TO WATCH

-

DUNCAN SCOTT Alloa, Swimming EVENTS: Freestyle, medley, relays

Covid KO’d the Olympic gold medallist’s crack at world titles last month but he has passed himself fit to hunt Games glory in the pool. However, the Alloa ace, 25, admits he could row back on his usual gruelling schedule, putting the defence of his 100m freestyle title in doubt.

Expect Scott to opt in for the 400metres individual medley plus the 200m free and a scrap with England’s Tom Dean. Heading the Scots charge in the relays also beckons.

JACK CARLIN Paisley, Cycling EVENTS: Sprint and keirin

Silver linings have been in healthy supply for the Paisley pedaller but Carlin is desperate to at last be a winner in the velodrome. With Jason Kenny having now retired to become his coach, the two-time Olympic medallist has golden opportunities in the sprint and keirin.

But Carlin will need to outpace Aussie great Matthew Glaetzer, who has fought off thyroid cancer and is trying to add to his five Commonwealth gongs.

LAURA MUIR Milnathort, Athletics EVENTS: 1500m

Fresh from a brilliant bronze at the World Championships, the Olympic silver medallist has admitted she has “unfinished business”as she chases the only international medal missing from her CV. Tripped in Glasgow 2014 and then busy with her exams for Gold Coast 2018, Muir will be a massive favourite to deliver gold with Kenya’s world champion Faith Kipyegon deciding to give these Games a miss.

SARAH ROBERTSON Selkirk, Hockey EVENTS: Women’s event

The Borderer, 28, flew the flag for Scottish hockey at the Tokyo Olympics and scored a stunning goal in Great Britain’s 4-3 win over India, which bagged a bronze medal.

Named as skipper here, midfielder Robertson has put her law career on pause again to make the case for an upset in an opening group that includes Australia, New Zealand and South Africa – plus minnows Kenya – with only the top two into the semis.

JAKE WIGHTMAN Edinburgh, Athletics EVENTS: 1500m

Scotland’s latest sporting history maker after his amazing World title win in Oregon earlier this month, Wightman will now chase the second leg of a possible summer treble in the men’s 1500m final in Birmingham.

Wightman took a bronze at Gold Coast four years ago but fellow Scots Josh Kerr and Neil Gourley have designs on being golden boys themselves.
