Dead-ends were not a frustration
GIO VAN BRONCKHORST insists there was no deadline-day frustrations over the decision not to bolster his Rangers squad for the Champions League.
Gers have added seven new faces over the summer but fans were expecting to see a late shopping spree on the back of securing a £40million group stage windfall.
However, boss van Bronckhorst said: “I’m not frustrated at all. I said a couple of days before the deadline that I was quite relaxed.
“We did quite a lot of business early in the window, which helped us get ready for the league but also the Champions League qualifiers.
“I’d rather have this situation than to keep looking for any additions.
“We were quite open. I thought the squad was already there but if we could have maybe enhanced the squad with possibilities we sure would have looked into it.
“But I’m really happy with the squad and the early business we’ve done.”
“At the end of the window I was quite relaxed because I think the squad is there.
“Of course you will always keep an eye on possibilities to strengthen your squad with opportunities that will make you better. But if that’s not the case then that’s why we decided to bring in no new players.”
Gers were linked with a move for Ross Barkley but van Bronckhorst insists the former Chelsea and Everton star was never a realistic option after being freed from his megabucks Stamford Bridge deal. He was also relieved to keep hold of Glen Kamara following links with Nice.
Asked if he’d looked at Barkley, the Ibrox gaffer said: “Of course we know his availability but he was never an option for us. We get many offers for players, for Glen as well. I always wanted to keep Glen. He is an important part of this squad.”
