MEMPHIS BELLE 4.55PM, TCM MOVIES

Inspiring and at times terrifying Second World War drama is a fictional version of the 1944 documentar­y Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress by director William Wyler, about the American crew of a B-17 bomber assigned a deadly final mission. Eric Stoltz, Harry Connick Jr and Billy Zane are among the frequent fliers fearing for their lives in skies over Nazi Germany. (1990) ****

FOOTLOOSE 6.45PM, FILM4

Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon), a teenager from Chicago, moves to a small town, where he attempts to overturn the ban on dancing instituted by the efforts of a local minister (John Lithgow). The 80s teen flick is known for the songs Footloose by Kenny Loggins and Let’s Hear It for the Boy by Deniece Williams being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. (1984) ****

WESTWORLD 11.05PM, TCM MOVIES

Yul Brynner is mesmerisin­g as a gun-slinging robot in a Wild West-themed park containing lifelike androids that unexpected­ly start to malfunctio­n and kill people in this classic sci-fi drama. Directed by Michael Crichton – before he wrote Jurassic Park – it’s a cautionary tale of a futuristic holiday resort gone horribly wrong. (1973) *****

SENSE AND SENSIBILIT­Y 6.15PM, FILM4

Emma Thompson won an Oscar for her witty screenplay of Jane Austen’s classic novel and she also stars alongside Kate Winslet. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy family, as they deal with sudden destitutio­n. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage. Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman play their respective suitors. (1995) ****

THIS IS SPINAL TAP 10.15PM, BBC FOUR

Some say this is the funniest film ever. That depends on your taste but the spoof rockumenta­ry, following a cringeful British rock band on a tour of the US, was hugely influentia­l and cemented its place in movie history with moments including the guitar amp that goes up to 11 and the scale replica Stonehenge stage prop “in danger of being crushed by a dwarf”. (1984) ****

FULL METAL JACKET 9PM TCM MOVIES

Seven years after making arguably the greatest horror film of all time, The Shining, Stanley Kubrick directed one of the best takes on Vietnam set to celluloid. Matthew Modine plays a Marine going from boot camp to horror in the field. (1987/15) *****
