You can always count on the old methods
A CHILD who was struggling at school is now a maths genius after his mum taught him to use an abacus.
Dr Rashmi Mantri, from Glasgow, used the ancient technique she learned in India to tutor Dhruv Maheshwari, 16.
The 45-year-old noticed Dhruv began struggling with maths in Primary 5.
But after six days he took to the abacus and now he is working as a data scientist.
Dr Mantri said: “He was in P5 when I noticed he was struggling. I’d ask him something like 35-13, he couldn’t do it.
“I never thought I’d teach him using an abacus, but it was something I used as a child in India and it was always helpful.
“Within six days I started to notice a difference and see results. He can use it much faster than a calculator.
“Other parents started getting in touch to ask if I could help their children.”
Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship at drinks firm Diageo.
His mum is now using her abacus tutoring to teach thousands of kids around the world.
