Train drivers ‘won’t blink’ over strikes

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT

THE train drivers’ union has warned it “won’t blink” over further strikes as it prepares for today’s national stoppage.

Aslef boss Mick Whelan said: “We’re in this for the long haul.”

There will be no trains between London and many major cities as the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, Aslef, Unite and the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association combine for the first time.

Only 11 per cent of trains are expected to run. Scotrail staff are not involved but the firm warned of “significant disruption” as signallers go on strike. Only 11 routes across Scotland are due to operate today.

About 9000 Aslef members will strike today over pay and conditions.

A further walkout is scheduled for Wednesday and RMT members will down tools next Saturday.

Whelan said: “We don’t want to strike but train companies are forcing our hand.

“We won’t blink to call more. We are in this for the long haul.”

Network Rail boss Andrew Haines said: “Despite our best efforts to compromise, unions remain intent on strike action.”
