Warning of HGV drivers shortage
MINISTERS are sleepwalking into a nightmare Christmas of empty shop shelves and dry petrol pumps, MPs have warned.
They say that, without urgent action, there won’t be enough HGV drivers to keep freight moving.
The Commons transport committee heard that with more drivers retiring than are being recruited, ministers are unlikely to prevent a repeat of previous disruption.
Chairman Huw Merriman said: “The Government risks sleepwalking into another supply-chain crisis.”
The committee wants better training, facilities and vehicle security to encourage staff to stay and tax penalties against big firms who fail to build better rest stops.
