Killer gets extra jail for cell phone

Road rage thug blows parole release after mobile find

- BY MIKE McQUAID

A GANGSTER locked up for a road rage killing has claimed he’s facing an extra two-and-a-half years in prison after being caught with an illicit phone.

Paul Lyons is serving 12 years after a high-speed motorway chase led to the death of another driver. Lyons, 41, a member of a notorious Glasgow crime gang, then fled to Spain in a bid to escape justice. Last October, while serving his sentence at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire, he was caught with an iPhone. Lyons appeared via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted possession of the device. He was asked by Sheriff James Spy when he is due to be released from his 12-year sentence.

The killer replied: “I was due for parole in May this year but because of the phone I have lost it. My release date is now December 2024.”

The sheriff said he would not add to that sentence and jailed him for six months with immediate effect.

Lyons, who is being held at HMP Kilmarnock, has two previous convictions for having phones at HMP Perth, where he served part of his sentence.

He was jailed in 2010 at the High Court in Glasgow after admitting culpable homicide and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Lyons consumed alcohol and drugs before ramming dad-of-two Mark Fleeman off the M74 in Lanarkshire, after losing his temper when the 32-year-old gestured at him because of his driving.
