HUW sinks Bath in Warriors second coming

-

HUW JONES finally made his second Glasgow debut and it was like the Scotland centre had never been away as his try helped Warriors shock Bath 22-19.

Jones re-signed at Scotstoun in the summer after a season in England with Harlequins but his return to playing was delayed by a back injury.

However, he hit the ground running in the Challenge Cup pool game as a Glasgow side missing many of its big names stunned the English giants on Saturday. Jones said: “I’ve been training for three or four weeks.

“That’s always a nice thing, to get a few weeks’ training under your belt before you get into games. It felt like a mini-preseason for me.

“We train at quite a high intensity so it does replicate the games quite well. So actually I felt quite good out there.”

With three players making their debuts and quite a few rookies in the squad, this looked like a Warriors second string.

But they put up a first-class fight, with George Turner and Lewis Bean also scoring tries and Domingo Miotti adding two conversions before Duncan Weir’s match-winning penalty five minutes from time.

Jones added: “It’s easy to get drawn into ‘Oh well, we’re the second team’.

“But no one believed that. You could see with everyone there that there is a first-team squad. We’re all there to pitch in and compete and drive the team forward.

“That was the biggest thing. The guys on their debuts weren’t nervous. They’re physical, they’re fit, they know exactly what they have to do so they were able to just step in and play really well.

“So I was super-proud of everyone out there but especially the younger guys and the guys playing their first games.”
