Tom Boyd completes sub-zero hike with Celtic fans
CELTIC legend Tom Boyd has helped raise more than £60,000 for charity after completing a gruelling trek across the Arctic Circle.
The former defender, 57, spent the weekend braving temperatures of -20C in the expedition with the Celtic FC Foundation.
He was part of a 16-strong group of supporters, each of whom had to raise at least £1800 to take part on the three-day expedition.
The Celtic Arctic Adventure was originally scheduled to take place in January 2021 but was postponed twice due to Covid.
Trekkers set off from Rovaniemi in Finland and followed a frozen river for 17 miles on the first day before hiking another 14 miles through forests and spending the night under the stars.
On their final day, they covered nine more miles. Boyd said: “Heading home now, what a journey. Congratulations to everyone who completed the trek, well done.
“The winner though was the Celtic FC Foundation, where over £60,000 was raised.
“A massive thank you to all who donated to this brilliant charity.”
The Foundation posted a video of Boyd and Co jumping around in a circle while singing “let’s all do the huddle” – a popular chant among Hoops fans –as they crossed the finish line. It added: “An incredible effort from all our participants, who have all successfully completed the challenge of a lifetime.”
Boyd began his career at Motherwell in 1983 and made 252 appearances before sealing a switch to Chelsea.
He moved to Parkhead in 1992 and made 302 appearances for the Bhoys before retiring in 2003, and is now an ambassador for the club.
