I’ll be the plucky 13

-

Beale’s first Rangers recruit. The number 13 might be unlucky for some but the former Norwich playmaker, who has penned a “longterm” contract, hopes his bold choice will trigger a more prosperous period in Glasgow after calling time on his Carrow Road frustrations.

Cantwell said: “Over the last few seasons I’d say things haven’t gone to plan. I don’t believe that 13 is an unlucky number as you make your own luck.

“I’m looking to make it my own and to have people remember it.”

Beale has been tracking the former Premier League player all month and a deal has finally been struck that allows Cantwell to make his move north six months before his Canaries contract ends.

The midfielder burst on to the scene with Norwich as a teenager, twice winning the Championship title.

He was linked with a move to Liverpool after an impressive debut campaign in England’s top flight. But he’s now looking to kick-start his career after a slump in form saw him deemed surplus to requirements by Canaries boss David Wagner.

Cantwell added: “I’m delighted and proud. This is a massive club and there is a massive responsibility when you sign for Rangers to be the player that the fans want to see.”

Beale, still in the hunt for Swansea winger Morgan Whittaker and Standard Liege midfielder Nico Raskin, said: “Todd is a player who is fully aligned to our playing style and we believe he will be a key player for the club.”

Sporting director Ross Wilson added: “Michael and I have spent a lot of time talking with Todd and with others about his quality and what he can bring to our squad. We’re excited to have him start.”
