Signing Jay can make Dons’ day

- by scott burns

ABERDEEN are homing in on a pre-contract for Go Ahead Eagles centre-back Jay Idzes.

The Dons had wanted to strike a six-figure deal for Idzes in this window but haven’t been able to come to an agreement with the Eredivisie side.

The 22-year-old defender is out of contract at the end of the season and Aberdeen can now pen terms for a summer switch.

Dutch sources close to Go Ahead have confirmed Idzes wants to make the move to Scotland and that has strengthened the Reds’ hand.

The Pittodrie outfit would still need to pay around £180,000 in training compensation come the summer.

Idzes moved to Go Ahead from FC Eindhoven in 2020.

If he does put pen to paper on a pre-contract, it may also put pressure on the Dutch side to sell now rather than wait until the end of the campaign.

Go Ahead Eagles, though, have made it clear that their priority is maintaining their Dutch top-flight status.

Their sporting director Paul Bosvelt has admitted every player has their price but nobody has even come close to their valuation.

Bosvelt has also made it clear they would rather lose Idzes in the summer than put their top-flight status at risk by taking a lowball offer.

Speaking to Destentor.nl, he said: “Amounts offered are not yet such that Jay Idzes can leave Go Ahead Eagles.

“Through Jay’s agent some clubs have shown an interest but there are no cases where we’re thinking about it seriously. Maintaining our place in the Eredivisie is the most important thing for us and Jay is important in that.

“I know everyone is ultimately for sale but the amount we may receive must be in proportion to what we hand over in terms of quality.

“Staying in the Eredivisie is more important to us than getting a small fee for Jay.”
