Superheroes scalp dons

-

clash following a horror run of just one win in their last nine games and a 5-0 hammering by Hearts.

But chairman Dave Cormack was in the stands at Recreation Park to see the Dons plummet to new depths against the part-timers.

The US-based chief was seen speaking to shellshocked Goodwin after the final whistle but now faces a major call with the Pittodrie club’s season spiralling down the drain.

Aberdeen legend Willie Miller admitted the result makes it almost impossible for Goodwin to remain.

He said: “It’s a really difficult situation that Dave finds himself in. It’s a huge decision for him.

“I think Jim and the chairman will have to have serious discussions. I don’t know if there’s enough goodwill from the chairman to allow Jim to stay.

“To be perfectly honest, Darvel were the better team. Aberdeen had the ball in the back of the net and it should have stood. But it was a magnificent performance from Darvel.”

Goal hero Jordan Kirkpatrick was last night planning to pull a sickie to celebrate the shock.

The West of Scotland Premier League outfit set up a fifth-round clash with Falkirk and ex-St Mirren man Kirkpatrick admitted he might need to call his gaffer in the morning.

He said: “I’m meant to be at work tomorrow so I’ll need to phone my boss and see if I can get it off !

“I might get the day off – or maybe I’ll phone in sick!

“It’s a bit surreal. I’m sure we’ll digest it but it’s just unbelievable.

“This means everything. You saw the crowds, it was just amazing. It just shows what it means to them.

“It shows the level a lot of the boys are at. It’s not about the league – it’s about the players and the standards we’ve set.

“It’ll take me a few days to digest it.”

Kirkpatrick nabbed the first-half winner and Darvel saw it out against the Dons to become the first side from that level to knock out a senior team for more than 50 years.

He’s looking to repeat the feat against the Bairns and said: “The goal was one of those ones where you just want to get it on target. It wasn’t even the best of strikes but you just hope it goes in and it did.

“It’s another team and we’ll have confidence going there. Hopefully we can do it again.”

Darvel boss Mick Kennedy insisted he knew his men would do the business against the big boys from the Premiership.

He said: “I said in the team talk before we went out it’s about the whole community, it’s not just our game.

“I believed in the guys and was drumming it in all week to believe in each other.

“There is a real togetherness about the club, a door-die attitude, and when you have that it’s remarkable what you can achieve.

“I said before the game it was important we started well and got a foothold in the game.

“We deserve to be in front and after that it was about team spirit, going into the trenches with each other.

“I believed in the club from day one and told the board we’d build something special over the next few years, something for the town to be proud of.

“Where can we go next? The reality is we’ve got to Arthurlie in the league and we need three points.

“I need to get the boys back down to earth but they can enjoy this and then get back to work on Thursday. It’s a remarkable achievement.”
