JON : HAVE A GO OR WE’LL END UP HOBBLED

-

JON ROBERTSON hobbled into the Championship with Alloa last time around – now he wants to give them a proper run at it by flooring Edinburgh today.

Fouth-placed Wasps head to Meadowbank able to close the Citizens’ threepoint cushion with a first win in four away trips.

Robertson helped guide this side into the second tier in 2018 with an extratime win over Dumbarton – even if he had to watch the drama unfold – thanks to a sprinkling of Jordan Kirkpatrick magic.

He’s well versed in playoff pressure at both ends of the table and reckons this Alloa side are still to show what they can truly do.

The midfielder, 33, said: “When we got promoted up to the Championship, that had everything in it.

“The second leg wasn’t a great spectacle down at Dumbarton, the pitch wasn’t brilliant, the quality maybe wasn’t on show.

“But Kirky’s goal was good enough to win any game. It was bittersweet for me because I had to go off injured in the first half.

“It was my knee and it turned out to be nothing serious. It was a knock, it wasn’t even a twist.

“But there was a point I couldn’t put weight on it and I thought for a minute I’d done something serious.

“I still remember the celebrations after – I was hobbling around, I probably didn’t do it any favours!”

Brian Rice’s charges may still have eight games left after today but, with four more teams within nine points of them, Robertson isn’t playing it down.

He added: “It’s massive. ourselves and Edinburgh, along with a couple of other teams, we’ve been to-ing and fro-ing all season in terms of league position. our games have been entertaining and close, so I don’t expect it to

be any different. If they beat us and go six points ahead, you’re quickly running out of games to have a thought of catching them.

“It’s massive for us and it’s got to be a game where we have to have a real go with a view to catching them and staying with them to fight it out realistically for that third position.

“I still don’t think we’ve reached our full potential, I can’t put my finger on as to why. There is a bit still to go for this squad.

“There are a couple of players in there who maybe don’t even realise how good they could be, still young, still learning, which is a positive.”

Danny Handling and John Robertson are slinging it out in the Citizens’ goalscoring charts, with the latter leading by one on 16.

Not that Handling is all that bothered who keeps them in the promotion race, so long as they stay in it.

Handling has already passed his personal target said: “Everyone is on a high because we’ve been getting good results, it’s just a case of maintaining that.

“You can imagine what Robbo’s like because the wee man is in good form. It is all friendly banter and makes it more enjoyable.”
