Sorry Danny: We will repay angry fans by beating drop

- Scott Burns

DANNY ARMSTRONG has said sorry to Kilmarnock fans for their side’s Scottish Cup exit.

The wide man admits they must learn from it, because Killie can’t afford to be sorry again in their battle for Premiership survival.

The second bottom Ayrshire side’s sole focus is on beating the drop after their 2-1 Cup KO in Inverness on Friday.

Armstrong, who set up Killie’s second-minute opener against Caley, said: “I don’t blame them [fans being angry]. All I can ask is they stick by us.

“We need to be together and the more positive they are, the better we can be on the pitch. A lot travelled up on Friday and we thank them for that and apologise we didn’t get further.

“We now have the league to concentrate on and we have loads of big games coming up.

“We certainly need to learn from Friday night because if we want to push up the league we need to be better than what we showed.

“It is gutting and devastating as it was a great chance to get to Hampden again but we weren’t good enough.

“We made a great start then we gave away a penalty. I am not entirely sure it was a penalty because if you kick the ball off your own hand I am not sure you can call that as a penalty.

“I thought if you do that it is not a penalty but they were given it. We then conceded a sloppy second goal as well and we weren’t good enough on the night. We need to move on and focus on the league now.”

Derek McInnes’ side start their final 10 league games at home to St Johnstone this weekend with just a three-point lead over Dundee United.

Armstrong added: “It is tight and we need to keep pushing on, picking up points and winning games.

“The boys know that, the fans know that and we are going to work as hard as we can to get those points.

“There is belief within the group. We have shown some great performances over the course of the season and the way we are playing at home is good.

“But we need to pick up points on the road and if we keep pressing and pushing forward I’m sure we’ll be OK.”
