Time to give the Buddies’ rivals six of the best

-

ALEX GREIVE was on the other side of the globe at the time.

But the Kiwi has heard all about the split sickener that left St Mirren at the end of the world after missing a place in the top six two years ago.

Now, with four games to go and the Buddies in control of their own destiny, the striker is determined to help secure the club’s first ever top-half finish.

Saints were sitting in sixth on matchday 33 in 2021 when they conceded an 89th-minute equaliser to Hamilton, allowing St Johnstone to pip them.

Currently in seventh, Saints face a massive home clash with sixth-placed Livingston who are a point ahead next.

And Greive said: “We’re very determined to finish in the top six. We’ve still got a couple of players who were here a few years ago when they missed out on goal difference.

“We’re all working hard towards it because we don’t want that to happen again. It would be a shame for the chance to go to waste now.

“It’s a weird one because we’ve got a couple of weeks to wait because of the international break. We’ve got full focus on the Livi game and it’s a massive one for the club.”

Before then Greive will head halfway around the world for a friendly double header against China with the All Whites.

The 22,000-mile round trip will tax the striker but he insists there will be no danger of jet lag before he faces the Lions.

He said: “You’ve just got to make sure you do all the right things, hydrating and eating the right food. I’m pretty used to all the travelling now so I don’t think it affects me that much.

“I arrive back on the Tuesday before the Livi game so I’ve got plenty of time to recover.

“I always look forward to international breaks because I love playing for New Zealand.

“It’s a good chance to get home and play in front of friends and family.”
