SPFL hits back in its fresh war with clubs

- By Michael gannon

THE SPFL have blasted back at the Scottish football Gang of Six who roasted league beaks over their external review by telling the rebels to get their facts straight.

Rangers, Aberdeen, Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and Livingston joined forces to slam chairman Murdoch MacLennan and chief executive Neil Doncaster’s handling of a report into SPFL governance.

The letter was scathing after MacLennan declared the review provided a clean bill of health and a pat on the back from external auditors Henderson Loggie.

The SPFL were accused of, among other things, airbrushing the findings and lacking transparency and independence.

The dispute started three years ago with Rangers’ row over league sponsors cinch, which ended in MacLennan issuing an apology and the league hit with costs after a court case.

The audit was set up to avoid future conflict – but the findings are now being disputed by the six clubs.

However, the SPFL have returned fire in a statement issued last night.

It said: “The letter contained a number of factual inaccuracies, which we have now addressed with those clubs. We look forward to discussing the recommendations of the review with all Premiership clubs at a meeting, once the process has been completed.”

Record Sport understands the clubs are not going to back down – and have backing from around the divisions.

Stenhousemuir chairman Iain McMenemy said: “The handling of this review and report raises fresh questions regarding the judgment of those running our game.

“We welcome this intervention from six of our largest clubs and will support them to achieve transparency, clarity and accountability as a matter of urgency.”
