Alex’s aim is to shoot Saints into the top six

- By MicHael gaNNoN

ALEX GOGIC admits his acrobatic effort against Celtic was a tad ambitious for a man of his vintage.

But the St Mirren cult hero is convinced shooting for the Premiership top six and Europe is a far more realistic move to pull off.

The Cypriot was unlucky to end up on the losing side. He could have had a hat-trick, with an effort that rattled the bar and a late rocket blocked. But it was his overhead-kick attempt that saw Joe Hart bail out Celts with a stunning stop.

Gogic said: “That effort was more in my teenage years – maybe I am still a teenager in my head!

“I thought, ‘Just do it’. I felt I had caught it sweet but fair play to Joe Hart, I just saw his hand push it away.

“When I hit the bar I was thinking, ‘Just go in’! It wasn’t meant to be.

“For the last one I tried! I wish it was that easy. They defended well. Two of them just blocked that shot. But we believe in what we’ve got. We’ve been playing well and we like that winning feeling after games. That is what we want more often.

“The top six and pushing to Europe is our aim and it has been since the start of the season. We did it last year and it was a great feeling after so many years.

“Our aim is to get top six and then it will be everything to fight for.”

St Mirren stood up to Celtic but Gogic is not interested in pats on the back. He said: “We play well and it’s like, ‘Well done’ but it’s happened too many times this season.

“If we made it 1-1 before half-time it would have been an interesting second 45 minutes but we didn’t give up. We had chances but we need to be more clinical.”
