What a bomber... look what I dug up in garden

BOMB disposal experts were called out after a man found an unexploded bomb in his garden.

Aaron Gibson was working in his garden in High Street, Dalbeattie, Kircudbrightshire, on Saturday when he unearthed it. After pulling it out he called police, who contacted the Royal Navy bomb squad.

A number of homes were evacuated while experts removed the device, suspected to be from World War II.

Aaron, 21, said: “I’d been out digging the back of the garden and I saw the end of this piece of metal which looked like the base for a whirly washing line. I got down on my knees and pulled it, it came out of the ground, I fell backwards and this big bomb landed on top of me.

“All of my neighbours were out, so I lay there for 10 or 15 minutes and didn’t know what to do – I could see it was in really good condition and felt like it could explode.

“I was shouting for help but after 10 or 15 minutes I decided I needed to move it and run. I saw the same bit of metal close to it so I was hoping there wasn’t a second one.

“It was just over half a metre and very heavy. Because of where it was and it had a tree root growing over it, it was in really good condition. The bomb squad were quite shocked at just how good a condition it was in.”

After phoning the police and taking pictures for the bomb squad, Aaron then had to turn off his gas and tell his neighbours to do the same.

A Royal Navy spokeswoman said: “The bomb disposal officer was able to determine the item did not present an explosive hazard and removed it from the scene for disposal.”
