Jim backs Louis to smash goal barrier on way to title

- BY SCOTT BURNS

JIM GOODWIN has backed Louis Moult to smash his 20-goal target and fire dundee United back into the Premiership.

The experienced striker took his tally to 15 with the midweek winner against Morton and his manager believes he can go on a scoring spree over the final nine games for the leaders.

Goodwin, whose side take on Arbroath tomorrow, reckons his team are creating chances and expects both Moult and Tony Watt to chip in and keep United top of the Championship pile.

He said: “Louis is hitting form at the right time. He’s had plenty of good opportunities in recent weeks. We need to keep on providing him with those chances.

“We believe we can get him two or three goalscoring opportunities a game and he tends to take at least one or two of those.

“He’s been a big player in recent games and has come up with some really important goals across the season. He has 15 goals now and I still think there is more to come from Louis and from the rest of the forward boys.

“Twenty goals for Louis isn’t unrealistic. That was the target that we set both him and Tony at the start of the season.

“If you’ve got two strikers up there who are scoring in the region of 20 goals, it gives you a great chance.”

United have led the title charge for most of the season and Goodwin knows the finishing line is coming into sight. He said: “There has been pressure and a level of expectation from day one.

“I don’t think anybody anticipated Raith Rovers having the kind of season that they’ve had. They’ve been excellent.

“We’re only eight points behind the total that Dundee won the league with last season but I definitely think more points are going to be needed than what they managed to get. We’re exactly where we want to be.”
