AN OUT-of-control XL bully-type dog was put down and a woman charged after armed police raced to an incident in a street.

Officers swooped on Broughton Place in Coatbridge at about 3.40pm on Thursday after receiving reports of an incident involving the pet. The dog, believed to be aged just seven months, was euthanised at the property by a vet. No one was injured. A 30-year-old woman has since been charged with an alleged breach of the Dangerous Dogs Act. One resident told the Record he was shocked by the number of police who attended. He added: “It was mental. There was cops everywhere. We had no idea what was happening until we saw a vet going in.” Another local said: “Shawfield has never been so busy before, there were around 20 police cars responding to the incident.”

A third added: “There were police everywhere and then a vet arrived.”

Another resident said: “I drove past and it was absolute carnage.”

Images from the scene show multiple police vehicles in attendance alongside ambulance crews.

It comes after armed officers were forced to shoot dead a large bully-type dog when it mauled two men in Hamilton last month.

Emergency crews were called to Tinto View after receiving reports of the out-of-control animal on January 23.

One man was left with serious injuries while the other was treated for minor wounds. The Record understands the canine had been rescued from England.

A crackdown on XL bullies began in Scotland on February 23.

Police Scotland said: “Around 3.40pm on Thursday, March 7, officers attended outside a property in Broughton Place, Coatbridge, after being called to assist with restraining an XL bully-type dog.

“A vet attended to euthanise the dog. No one was injured during the incident.

“A 30-year-old woman has been charged with an offence relating to the Dangerous Dogs Act and will be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.”
