Kyle: I’m so sorry that we blew it

- By SCOTT BURNS

CAPTAIN Kyle Vassell apologised to the Kilmarnock faithful for blowing their Scottish Cup dream.

Killie headed to Aberdeen as heavy favourites but it was the home side who defied the odds with a 3-1 win.

The Ayrshire side had won their league clashes with the Dons and hadn’t conceded a goal but the tables were turned on Saturday.

Vassell, above, said: “It’s a bitter one because I wanted to lead the boys out at Hampden. The fans were amazing. They came up here and sold out their end so we apologise to them because it’s a sore one.

“I don’t think it was that we didn’t turn up but the goals we conceded could have been avoided. We lost goals at bad times and the manner of them, with deflections and stuff, was hard to take.

“Goals win games and although we started both halves the stronger team, luck was on their side today.

“So we’re very frustrated. It was three goals that could have been avoided and we didn’t create enough going forward.”

Defender Stuart Findlay didn’t get much luck as his misjudgment led to the first and then Aberdeen’s final goal deflected off him.

Vassell added: “He’s big enough and strong enough to get over it. It is what it is.

“I don’t think there was much fault in the goals, we’ve just been unlucky.

“Afterwards I just shook everyone’s hands and said, ‘Lets get over it and go again’ so we’ll be back at work preparing for the next game.

“We didn’t get battered or run over, we lost goals at bad times and didn’t create enough. But we were always in it, the subs came on and made a decent impact.

“I always want to look at the positives from every game so we’ll just get ready to go for St Mirren now.”
