NOW I’M COOKING
Caroline, 72, gifted new kitchen after handing £15k to firm that went bust
A WIDOW who handed £15,000 life savings to a well-known firm days before it went bust was overjoyed yesterday after being gifted a brand new kitchen.
Pensioner Caroline McVicar was left waiting for fitters to turn up to her home this week before learning that DM Design had gone into liquidation.
The 72-year-old told how she was stuck with a “shell” of a kitchen after the firm, which called itself “Scotland’s longest running kitchen, bedroom and bathroom company”, ceased trading with the loss of more than 30 jobs.
Now a big-hearted Paisley firm has come to her rescue and will do the work for free. Caroline said: “I’m so happy and grateful. I couldn’t bear the thought of more months stuck like this and not being able to cook.
“This has restored my faith in others. They’re coming out to measure up next week.”
About 30 customers are thought to have been affected when DM Design, based in Cumbernauld, ended trading last week.
Gran-of-five Caroline had handed over the last of the cash for her £15,000 kitchen last month.
The mum of two, from Hamilton, had returned to live in Scotland in recent months from Spain, where she had emigrated with her late husband 25 years ago.
After reading Caroline’s story, InstyleKitchens and Bathrooms, which has showrooms in Paisley and Greenock, arranged to the work for free.
Director Lesley Douglas, who runs the firm with husband Craig, said: “£15,000 is a lot of money. We’d hate for that to happen to one of our elderly relatives so wanted to do something to help.
“We’re just delighted we’re able to help her out.”
