Drive a hard bargain for lowest car insurance

- BY JACK EVANS

HERE are some tips and tricks to help you get the best deal on car insurance and save some cash...

● Shop around

Comparison sites, such as Compare the Market, give prices from a variety of providers and allow you to tweak your policy details – such as intended mileage – to see how it alters costs.

● Don’t allow your insurance to auto-renew

Many policies renew automatically. It often means you’ll pay more. If your policy is coming to an end, shop around to check you’re getting the best deal. Mostly, you’ll pay less if you check out other policies first.

● Check if adding a responsible driver lowers your premium

Having an older, more experienced motorist as a named driver can help reduce costs. It can also go the other way – increasing your premiums – so test it via a comparison site first.

Remember, you still need to be the main driver. If it’s found that “named driver” on your policy actually uses your car most, your policy could be cancelled. This action is known as “fronting” and can also see insurers not paying out in the event of an accident. l Pay annually if you can Though you can pay monthly, you’ll spend less if you pay in one go.

● Make sure your mileage is accurate

Insurers use estimated mileage to determine how much you’ll be driving. Consider how far you drive on a day-to-day basis and factor in longer trips you have planned. Don’t be tempted to go low with mileage. If an insurer finds you travel a lot further than stated on your policy, your cover could be voided.

● If you’re insuring more than one car, take a look at a multi-car policy

These offer a discount for covering more than one vehicle so it might be cheaper than covering each car individually. However, it can go the other way and make things more costly, so get a number of quotes together before signing up.
