The brown trout season is officially under way and it feels like all the fishing is ready to kick off.

For the game anglers, hopefully you’ve managed to pick up enough brownie points through the cold weather to cash in for proper brownies after today, March 15.

There’s something very refreshing about these milestones cycling round. I’ve moved house, jobs, even country more than a few times but every year the trout season starts and I’ve normally got a season ticket of some sort to take advantage of.

When I was a kid my season ticket was a proper treat and gave me freedom to roam about miles of bank with the odd trout for my bother.

A ticket for the Kelvin as a final year student put me back in touch with angling after a few years’ hiatus when my weekends were otherwise engaged.

It was a long, torrid bus trip out to the Upper Clyde on opening day that made me decide I needed a fishing wagon so I could spread my

wings but a season ticket to catch some of those buttery yellow brown trout. Moving out from the city to a practical affordable family home meant joining up with new angling associations, trekking new rivers and burns to learn the pools, explore the surrounding area, meet some locals and get acclimatised. While the technology might have changed a bit over the years, the fish are the same. You can link up a livescope fish finder to a headsup VR display these days if you really want to but at the core of it you’re still just out there with a rod, line and hook getting it done no matter how complicated you make it.

Don’t get disheartened if it snows on opening day, though, we do live in Scotland after all.

If you caught Paul Young’s Q&A the other day, he summed it up really well. He was asked questions by young anglers and said he comes across lots of youngsters that are watching his programmes on catch-up.

The fishing from the 80s and 90s is almost a historical document now but they must have done something right because its spirit carries through, the same excitement and joy for angling is there. The anticipation of that first take thankfully won’t ever change.

The Scottish Youth Fly Fishing Team are holding a fundraiser competition at Kinross Fishery on May 4.

The £30 entry includes lunch, with prizes for first, second and third place on the day.

All funds raised on the day are going to the team as Gary from the fishery is kindly donating ticket money.

The Scottish Youths are raising funds for their quest for gold in England 2024.

You can book a spot through Kinross Fishery on 07376762057 or Colin Kirk on 07976920121.

While the tech might have changed a bit over the years the fish are still the same
