THE BROTHER OF ALL TRIPS

Bevis calls on sibling to be lucky charm

- BY Michael baillie

BEVIS MUGABI revealed his brother reckons they were Motherwell’s lucky charm for their first league win at Ibrox in 27 years.

The Steelmen stunned the Premiership leaders two weeks ago as their 2-1 win saw them depart the home of Rangers in the top tier with all three points for the first time since 1997.

Motherwell defender Mugabi’s brothers, Gordon and Rodney, had travelled up from London and relished being among the away support as goals from Theo Bair and Dan Casey ended their long wait for glory in Govan.

Mugabi joked they need to book flights to head north for their meeting with Aberdeen today and admits it was great for his brothers to be at Ibrox to witness Well’s long awaited win and share the special moment.

Mugabi said: “The boys enjoyed the win over Rangers for sure, as did the supporters – 27 years since we beat them in the top league is a long time, so it was a moment for all of us especially for the fans and our families, who were there as well.

“Luckily enough my brothers, Gordon and Rodney, flew up to watch the game, so that made it a bit more special for myself.

“They were in the crowd buzzing, shouting and bouncing.

“They had flown up from London.

“So they inspired me and they were taking credit for it, saying the reason we got the result was because they were there.

“They picked the right game to come up for, so they better book their flights again this weekend as we need the three points again.

“We’ll take confidence from it but every game is different and give you different challenges, so we have to be ready for that against Aberdeen.”

Aberdeen haven’t won in 11 league games and Mugabi knows what they are going through as Motherwell chalked up a 15-game winless run earlier in the campaign.

He said: “We’ve experienced that when results aren’t coming.

“So we’ve been in their shoes and all we can do is make sure we’re the better team.

“Mentally it is difficult when you are going into games and you’ve prepared to execute the game plan but you concede a sloppy goal or something.”

Motherwell have not played since their win at Ibrox but Mugabi insists there was no let up from gaffer Stuart Kettlewell as they push for a place in the top six and to stay clear of the relegation battle.

He said: “The mood in the camp has been good but things turn around quickly in football, so now it’s on to this weekend and trying to get the three points.

“It’s not been a holiday whatsoever. The gaffer has been putting us through our paces, so we’re ready to go this weekend.

“The gaffer is very intense and wants the best from us every day in training and how we train.”
