As a kid I wished I looked like Nitro from Gladiators

The DJ and television presenter, 27, on keeping up with his Strictly family and sharing the TV remote with his girlfriend, EastEnders actress Molly Rainford

- The last Word tyler West

What are you currently watching on tv?

We finished the traitors and it’s left a massive hole in my life. i’ve been hearing a lot about one day and about people bawling through it. i’m not sure if that’s a good one just now with the stress of moving. Me and Molly are moving in together and we’re decorating the flat so every evening we’re covered in paint.

What did you watch growing up?

Gladiators. so it was quite nostalgic when they brought it back. i grew up with nitro – i could only ever wish i could look like that!

you were on Strictly in 2022. Are you still in touch with people from the show?

Molly! Kai [Widdrington] and neil [Jones] are my best friends. i’m Uncle ty to neil and Chyna [Mills]’s baby Havana, which is amazing. i’m catching up with Hamza [Yassin] in a few weeks.

Any guilty pleasures?

selling sunset. Molly got me into it.

What about soaps?

eastenders, not just because of Molly. We always watched it in my family. it’s smashing it at the moment.

Where do you watch television?

in an empty living room without a sofa that hasn’t turned up! i’m a massive nerd for electronics. i’ve got so many wires and gadgets – the one request in the new flat is a media wall, somewhere that makes you feel like you’re at the cinema or a private screening. that’s on the to-do list.

Who controls the remote?

Molly! she’s a good person to watch tv with. When it gets intense, we start screaming at the telly.

Any tv snacks?

salted rice cakes with Biscoff Crunchy spread on top. that’s a game changer.

can you tell us about your work with WaterAid?

i became a WaterAid ambassador after visiting Zambia to see how clean water can change lives. seeing it first hand really changed my perspective. Clean water genuinely does mean life – it empowers people to fulfil their potential.

Growing up on a south london council estate, i found it hard to see outside the walls i was in, to dream about what i was going to be when i was older. But you can’t even come to the process of dreaming if all you are thinking about is, “Am i going to be able to get clean water today?” tyler is supporting WaterAid’s work to help change lives for good with clean water and decent toilets.
