Liam lost after cruise ship fall
Devastated young wife left searching for answers to mystery on North Sea voyage
A YOUNG wife has spoken of her anguish after her husband fell off a cruise ship in the North Sea and is missing feared dead.
Liam Jones, from Dundee, was travelling onboard the MSC Euribia for a luxury seven-day holiday around Europe for his mum’s birthday.
The 23-year-old, a social work student, vanished as the ship sailed to Hamburg last Saturday.
The cruise operator has confirmed the disappearance of a passenger. It is understood police boarded the ship after it docked at Southampton yesterday morning.
Liam’s heartbroken wife, Sophia Mcphee, 20, says she has been given little information from authorities since her husband vanished.
Sophia, who married Liam two years ago, told the Record: “I feel so lost. He’s just... gone. I’m never going to see him again. I’m devastated.
“I have so many questions and I’m not getting any answers to what’s happened.”
Sophia last saw Liam on Thursday, March 14, when he travelled from their home in Dundee to Glasgow to meet his family. They boarded the ship in Southampton the following day.
The Euribia was going to Hamburg, France, Belgium, and Amsterdam before heading back to Southampton.
Liam’s final text to Sophia was that he was feeling seasick. She then received a message from his sister to say there had been an accident on board.
Sophia continued: “I was first contacted by his sister on Sunday. She said there had been an accident and Liam ‘wasn’t coming back’.
“She then said she had seen CCTV and he’d gone overboard. I’ve not had any contact from anyone since.”
“I’ve been trying to get in contact with the MSC since Monday but it’s been a headache. They’re not getting back to me.”
A spokesman for MSC Cruises said yesterday: “A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on March 16 as the ship was sailing to Hamburg. This was reported to the authorities. The police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner.
“We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.
“Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British national following an incident in the Netherlands and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
