WHEEL OF FORTUNE

Olympic track legend’s firm worth £1.7million

- BY STUART MACDONALD

OLYMPIC legend Sir Chris Hoy boosted the value of his business to almost £1.7million last year.

Figures show the cycling champion is continuing to profit from his success despite retiring from the sport 11 years ago.

The Edinburgh-born racer’s finances have soared since he won three golds at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He claimed six gold medals in total, including two at London 2012, before retiring in 2013.

Hoy, 48, discovered he had cancer last year and said it came as a “huge shock, having had no symptoms”.

He said he has faced a “long hard winter” undergoing chemotherapy but has remained focused on fitness.

Since his retirement he has launched careers as a professional racing driver, television pundit and a children’s author. Latest accounts for his company Trackstars Limited, which channels income from his commercial activities, show it has total assets of more than £2million.

After paying off creditors, the company has funds of £1,692,452.

The firm has almost doubled its value in the last five years.

Hoy, 48, is a director with wife

Sarra. Since his success, Hoy has been the face of advertising campaigns for Gillette and Kellogg’s Bran Flakes.

He has also had lucrative deals with Highland Spring and Adidas and has launched his own range of bicycles called Hoy Bikes.

In 2016, he launched a series of children’s books which he has co-written. Flying Fergus is about a nine-year-old boy who inherits his dad’s rusty old bike only to discover there is more to it than meets the eye.

Hoy, who has not disclosed what type of cancer he has, intends to go to the Paris Olympics this summer where he is expected to be part of the BBC commentary team.

He said: “It’s an exciting year of work ahead, not least with the Paris Olympics in July. I can’t wait to get stuck in, have fun and share it with you all.”
