Ewen’s on Casey to join playing partner Paul among game’s elite
EWEN FERGUSON is eager to play alongside more of golf ’s big names – because it will help him make it at the elite level.
The Scot was paired with Paul Casey, one of Europe’s all-time greats, in the final round of the Singapore Classic.
Ferguson admits the five time Ryder Cup star’s presence affected his game as he posted a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for 11th on 11 under.
Casey was two shots better off in sixth after a 69 and Ferguson believes playing with other top stars can only be good for him and his game.
The 27 year old told Record Sport: “I was really happy to play alongside Paul, but I do think it adds an extra little bit of tension to the game.
“Paul’s a well-renowned name, who draws plenty of spectator interest, so you always want to impress him because he’s also probably wondering what sort of a player I am.
“That makes it very different than if you’re playing with most others who I’m very comfortable in their company.
“Paul’s an incredible golfer and I just made it a lot tougher going lower than my 71 against someone of his stature.
“When you get paired with a big star, and you’re not yet such a big star yourself, you want to learn off that player .
“But I’ve watched Paul play alongside Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour, so I’m kind of thinking, I’m playing alongside a guy who’s played in the same group as Tiger.
“It is just a little tougher, and requires a lot more focus when you do play alongside someone of Paul’s stature.”
While Ferguson was subdued, Swede Jesper Svensson was celebrating after he parred the third extra playoff hole to win a maiden Tour title over Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, after both players finished on 17-under.
