McCabe: We’ll party – but not too much

- BY FRASER WILSON

HISTORY-MAKER Rhys McCabe promised to let his Airdrie heroes off the leash to celebrate the club’s first silverware in 15 years.

But the Diamonds boss insists there will be no hangover come Friday night when the push for the Premiership play-offs gets back under way against Ayr.

The 31-year-old became the youngest manager to win the SPFL Trust Trophy after goals from Liam McStravick and Nikolay Todorov saw off TNS.

McCabe, whose side are a point clear of Dunfermline in fourth in the Championship, said the celebrations would flow long into the night.

He said: “Absolutely. I try and say I’m a modern manager but it’s not often you win silverware!

“I know we’ve got an important game on Friday. We’ll be mindful of that.

“But we’ll make sure we enjoy tonight because moments like this in your career don’t happen often.

“It’s unbelievable. Hearing the celebrations in the dressing room, I think it means more to the boys than it does me!

“We’ll make sure we enjoy it. I said regardless of a win or loss, I wanted the boys to enjoy the occasion.

“I wanted us to enjoy the game and remember it as much as we can so we can tell the kids and grandkids about winning a piece of silverware.”

Airdrie have eight games left to secure a play-off spot after McCabe led them to promotion through the Championship play-off in his first season a year ago.

He added: “We were never expected to be there.

“The only people who thought that potentially was myself and my staff. I know how good the boys can be when we’re on it. Ultimately now it’s about eight cup finals. If we go and perform we have a right good chance.”
