DOUGIE HAS DOUBLE VISION

- BY MARK PIRIE

DELIGHTED Dougie Samuel is eyeing backto-back promotions despite Spartans being held by bottom side Clyde.

The Ainslie Park outfit got their play-off push back on track after a 6-2 mauling by Dumbarton with a hardfought point.

That ensured they stayed six points clear in fourth spot going into the crucial run in.

But having led Spartans to promotion to the SPFL from the Lowland League last term, Samuel is looking to take another step up.

He said: “It felt like a point won. It is hard to pick up points on the road anywhere in this league.

“But more importantly we were a bit more like ourselves in the first half. I thought we played very well without working the goalkeeper too much.

“But I thought we were in complete control of the and were really comfortable.

“Fair play to Clyde, in the second half I thought they were right in the action and got after us.

“We had to defend well especially on the back of losing six last week.

“I think that was our best clean sheet of the season.

“The wind made it really difficult and really tricky for both sides.

“Clearly both sides are playing for a lot just now as well, but I’m happy to take a point on the road.

“We are two points behind second and third with six games to go for a newly promoted team.

“I think the boys can be proud of their achievement so far but everybody is determined to finish off

the job and get into the play-offs.”

Former Scotland cap Marc McNulty had the best chance of the game for the visitors when he was slipped through one on one by Cammy Russell.

But the former Dundee United man was denied at point-blank range by Brian Kinnear in the Clyde goal. Ian McCall’s relegation- game threatened side will count themselves unlucky not to have taken all three points after Craig Howie saw his header crash off the post.

Jordan Allan was also unable to prod the ball into the empty net following a goalmouth scramble.

McCall wasn’t too downbeat as he sets about chasing down Stranraer and Bonnyrigg Rose – who sit two points ahead of them.

Those two go head to head next weekend but McCall is only focused on Clyde’s game at Peterhead.

He said: “Everybody has talked about the other teams and fixtures, but I have just completely concentrated on us.

“No matter what happens if we don’t win our games it doesn’t really matter.

“We need to keep getting performances like the second half here and turning that into goals. We have to go again next Saturday.”
